Grow your own papaya with this red-fleshed variety - a sweet red-orange flesh, juicy texture, and delicious tropical flavour.
Papayas are fast-growing and rewarding plants that can produce fruit in the right conditions. They are an excellent choice for warm, frost-free areas of New Zealand, subtropical gardens, and protected food forest environments.
For cooler parts of NZ, papayas can be grown successfully in a large container, greenhouse, or warm sheltered position where they are protected from cold temperatures.
Seeds have been carefully dried, allowing them to be stored until you are ready to plant. Store seeds in a cool, dry place until sowing.
Shipping within New Zealand only. Postage included in cost for residential post. ($5 extra for rural delivery).
Sowing:
Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before planting to encourage faster germination.
Sow seeds approximately 1 cm deep in a free-draining seed raising mix.
Keep soil warm and consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging.
Germination:
Best germination occurs in warm conditions around 25–30°C.
Germination usually takes approximately 2–6 weeks.
Growing Conditions:
Plant in the warmest, sunniest position available.
Choose a sheltered location protected from frost and cold winds.
Prefers fertile, well-drained soil with regular moisture.
In cooler NZ regions, grow in a greenhouse, large pot, or protected microclimate.
Growing on:
Papayas are fast-growing and can begin producing fruit quickly in good conditions.
Protect young plants from cold weather, as temperatures below about 10°C can slow growth and cause stress.
Protect from slugs and snails
