The Pink Velvet Banana is one of the most unusual and eye-catching bananas that can be grown. This small ornamental banana is prized for its lush tropical foliage and distinctive bright pink fruit pods that split open when ripe.
Pink Velvet Bananas remains relatively compact, making them suitable for smaller gardens, sheltered subtropical spaces, and diverse home food forest plantings.
The fruit contains soft edible flesh, although it is very seedy and is generally grown more for ornamental interest, biodiversity, and collector appeal than as a food crop. Its fast growth and dramatic appearance make it a rewarding feature plant in warm climates.
Pink Velvet Banana performs best in:
Warm, frost-protected locations
Moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter
Sheltered positions protected from strong wind
Full sun to partial shade
In cooler climates it may die back during winter and regrow in warmer conditions.
Ideal for:
Tropical-style gardens
Home food forests
Rare fruit collectors
Creating visual diversity and layered planting systems
Pink Velvet Banana is a fantastic choice for growers wanting to experiment with unusual edible and ornamental species while adding colour, texture, and conversation value to the garden.

Pink Velvet Banana seeds can be slow and inconsistent to germinate, so patience is important. The hard outer seed coat naturally protects the seed and can delay sprouting if conditions are too cool or dry.
For best results:
Soak seeds in warm water for 24–48 hours before planting
Use a free-draining seed-raising mix
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged
Maintain warm temperatures ideally around 25–30°C
Place in a warm, bright location out of harsh direct sun
Bottom heat from a heat mat can significantly improve germination speed and success rates.
Germination can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months depending on temperature and seed freshness, so avoid discarding trays too early.
