Sowing:

  • Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before planting to encourage germination.

  • Sow seeds approximately 5–10 mm deep in a free-draining seed raising mix.

  • Keep soil warm and consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging.

Germination:

  • Best germination occurs in warm conditions around 20–30°C.

  • Germination can take approximately 3–8 weeks, sometimes longer.

  • Fresh seeds generally germinate more reliably than older stored seed.

Growing Conditions:

  • Plant in a warm, sunny position with protection from strong winds.

  • Provide a strong trellis, fence, or pergola for the vigorous climbing vines.

  • Prefers fertile, well-drained soil with regular moisture during the growing season.

  • Apply compost and regular feeding to encourage strong growth and fruit production.

Growing in New Zealand:

  • Best suited to warmer areas such as Northland, Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Coromandel, and other frost-free coastal regions.

  • Choose a sheltered microclimate, ideally with a north-facing aspect.

  • In cooler areas, grow against a warm wall, in a greenhouse, or provide winter protection.

  • Young vines are more sensitive to cold temperatures and frost.

Growing on:

  • Passionfruit vines are fast-growing and can become highly productive once established.

  • Regular pruning helps maintain airflow, control size, and encourage new fruiting growth.

  • Seed-grown plants may show variation in fruit size, flavour, and productivity.
